The 2018 San Francisco International Arts Festival

This year, the SFIAF is dedicated to a half-century of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, and brings together some 40 artists and acts from the Bay Area and all around the globe.

As usual, the week-and-a-half event encompasses a stirring range of artistry: from dance and performance art to theater, cirque, and concerts. Among the musical highlights is a thought-provoking double-header by composer Anthony Brown and activist/scholar Angela Davis on Saturday, May 26th at 8 PM at the Cowell Theater: a performance of Brown’s Go For Broke, which honors the famed 442nd Infantry Regiment of World War II, mostly composed of Japanese-American soldiers, followed by the world premiere of Down by the Riverside: Requiem for a King, a jazz piece delving into Dr. King’s activism.

Other concerts include the Dina Zarif Ensemble at the Firehouse on Thursday, May 24th at 8 PM, which will feature Iranian singer Dina Zarif and San Francisco harpist Amelia Romano melding Iranian folk music with Flamenco and Tango; Orchestra Gold with Mariam Diakité—Malian big band—at Gallery 308 on Friday, May 25th at 7 PM; and the Melody of China with the Veve Voudou Drum & Dance Ensemble at the same venue on Sunday, June 3rd at 3 PM, among others.

Then there are the multiple dance productions—from the Indian classical dance of The Caged Bird Who Sings (Sunday, May 27th at 3 PM at the Cowell Theater) to 5 x Lorca by the San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company (Friday, May 25th at 9:30 PM at Gallery 308)—and the theatrical shows The Scion (starring Brian Copeland, June 1st through the 3rd at the Southside Theater) and Solo Date (starring Pao-Chang Tsai, May 31st through June 2nd at the same venue).

And we’ve only just scratched the surface of the SFIAF goings-on! You might consider buying one of the SFIAF Festival Passes if you’re interested in seeing more than one show—it’s an awesome deal!
