Halloween Events & Things to Do in San Francisco

Declare Pullman San Francisco Bay your Halloween headquarters this year, and you’ll have the Bay Area’s rich and varied lineup of holiday activities and general autumn fabulousness at your beck and call.

Here’s an overview of some of the events and activities going down in and around San Francisco this Halloween: some spookily themed, others simply fall happenings well worth your attention!

Boo at the Zoo: San Francisco Zoo & Gardens

Celebrate Halloween with the critters of the San Francisco Zoo at this popular annual shindig, taking place October 27th and 28th this year. Besides trick-or-treating, Halloween crafts, and other family-friendly activities, a definite highlight is the Pumpkin Stomp & Chomp: everything from red pandas and meerkats to grizzly bears munching holiday treats and engaging in stimulating enrichment activities.

SuperNatural Halloween Party: California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences will throw its own Halloween bash on October 27th. SuperNatural will feature everything from trick-or-treating and pumpkin-carving to live animal presentations and a silent disco at the Steinhart Aquarium.

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

Experience a unique coastal harvest festival in the “World Pumpkin Capital” of Half Moon Bay on October 13th and 14th. This 48th Annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival will feature some whopping weigh-off gourds, an enormous mosaic pumpkin sculpture, live music, food, and some 250 arts-and-crafts festivals. The Pumpkin Festival Parade on Saturday at noon features San Francisco Giants right fielder Hunter Pence as Grand Marshal.

Halloween-Worthy Tours

Guided tours of all stripes interpret San Francisco history, landmarks, and culture all year round, of course, but given the season you might especially consider, for example, a visit to the infamous prison on Alcatraz Island (one of the Bay Area’s best-known haunted hotspots), a paranormally oriented walkthrough of Chinatown, or a lantern foray into the supernatural realm of Pacific Heights.

Aki Matsuri Fall Festival

Celebrate a half-century of the San Francisco Japan Center at the Aki Matsuri Fall Festival on October 20th at Japantown Peace Plaza, enjoying taiko drumming and other live music, craft workshops, and more.

Halloween Bashes & Bar Crawls

San Franciscans know how to party, needless to say, and Halloween comes marked by a whole slew of balls, bashes, and pub crawls all around the city. SF Station has a pretty comprehensive roundup.
